Up until my thirties my cooking skills were pretty limited and my meal planning consisted of heading to the grocery store to scan the aisles for what I considered to be “healthy” food at the time.  Our meals were not very exciting (let’s just say I wore out the cord on our rice steamer) and we ate out a lot.

Fast forward to 2017 and we cook almost every meal at home now.  My husband goes out a bit more than I do for business reasons but, as a couple, we eat out about once a week on average.

Eating out is fun and I believe we should all take a break from our kitchens to socialize and enjoy good food while letting someone else do the clean up.  I also believe takeout has its place in our lives.  There are days and even seasons in your life when it makes a lot of sense mentally and physically to let someone else do the cooking.

However, is it possible that Americans may be eating out too much these days?  Statistics reveal that the average American eats out 4-5 times per week.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2014, the average American household spent $2,787 on restaurant meals and takeout, compared to $3,971 on groceries. But in 2015, the average amount spent on restaurants and takeout jumped $221 to $3,008. Grocery spending, by contrast, increased just $44 per household to $4,015.  This shows us that dining at restaurants and ordering takeout aren’t just luxuries anymore. They’re becoming the norm.  People simply are not cooking as much.

I have to admit, when I first started meal planning it had EVERYTHING to do with saving money. Since I’m in the fitness industry I already had an idea about how to choose healthy foods.   I just wanted to spend less in restaurants.  However, over time, the more I cooked and learned about food, the more my husband and I began to prefer my cooking to most restaurants.

Last week, my husband was out of town and since I was cooking for one I decided to take a break from the kitchen and pick up a burrito from one of the local taquerias.  The moment I took my first bite of the burrito I was reminded why I like to cook at home most of the time.   It turned out to be mediocre and I realized that the ingredients were probably not the same quality I would have purchased.  I ate the remaining half for lunch the next day and decided to cook for one for the rest of the week.  It turns out I prefer my own cooking unless the chef is WAY better at it than I am.

Taste and cost are two really big drivers that motivate me to meal plan and cook at home even on the days I don’t feel like it.  However there are other good reasons why I believe it pays off big to cook more at home.

EIGHT MORE REASONS TO COOK AT HOME MORE OFTEN

  • You know what goes into the food. When I make our food, I get to choose how much butter, oil, salt, and sugar I add.  Sometimes I add more than the recipe calls for and sometimes I cut it back.  I can also make substitutions that I think are healthier for us like swapping out more refined grains for whole grains, adding more veggies, and choosing oils that I believe are better than others.
  • You know where it came from.   While some restaurants are now offering organic and all natural foods on their menus, not every restaurant does.   It’s important to me to serve my family, guests, and even our pets food that I believe is as close to its natural state as possible. That doesn’t mean we buy all organic or avoid all processed food.  It means that when I shop and choose which foods we will eat I pay close attention to where the food was sourced from and what ingredients or additives went into it.
  • It can make a difference environmentally.  As an animal lover and conservationist, I prefer to buy humanely raised meat and dairy as well as wild-caught sustainable seafood.  Eating at home can limit the amount of packaging that needs to be recycled.  We live on the San Francisco bay and it’s heartbreaking to see plastic and packaging wash up on the beach so I like to do my part to limit how much of it gets tossed into the bins at our house.
  • You’ll have money to spend on other things. Eating out can be pricey.  It’s amazing how much you save – and how many more high quality ingredients you can afford – when you eat at home.
  • Quality time with your family.  Studies have shown that kids who eat with their families frequently are less likely to get depressed, consider suicide, and develop an eating disorder.   When a child is feeling down or depressed, family dinner can act as an intervention. This is especially true of eating disorders, says Dianne Neumark-Sztainer, PhD, a professor at the University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health, who has studied the impact of family meal patterns on adolescents. “If a child eats with his or her parents on a regular basis, problems will be identified earlier on,” she says. Sitting down to a meal is just as important for adults.  It can help relieve stress and allow you to take a break from the busyness of life.  For couples, it’s a great opportunity  to catch up on each other’s day and build a stronger relationship.
  • You can learn new skills. The more I cook, the more confident I feel in the kitchen.  Some of the recipes I choose to experiment with now I would have totally avoided five years ago.  Meal planning and cooking has helped me with my organizational skills and ability to stick to tasks long term.
  • Eating leftovers saves you time.  One of the bonuses of cooking at home is being able to freeze the leftovers or have them for lunch the next day.  Freezing them allows you to have healthy meals ready to go on the days you’d rather not or don’t have time to cook and packing your lunch with healthy leftovers saves you the time of scouting out healthy food during your precious lunch break.  Packing your lunch may even allow you time to take a midday walk or do a mini-workout.
  • Weight Control.  It may surprise you that as a personal trainer I listed weight management last.  I did that on purpose.  I personally believe that unless your body has an underlying medical issue if you focus on eating foods that fuel your body well most of the time and consuming portion sizes that are suitable for your lifestyle then your body will eventually settle into its natural weight.  Food has been used way too often to manipulate bodies to be something they were not naturally designed to be so I encourage you to focus on eating a healthy variety of foods rather than just weight loss.

It’s true that cooking takes time which is precious to all of us.  However, preparing tasty and healthy meals doesn’t have to be a long or complicated process.  Start with simple recipes and give yourself permission to assemble pre-cooked food like a roasted chicken from your deli combined with a salad and some mashed sweet potatoes.  Invest in tools like rice steamers and slow cookers so you can cook while you are doing other things.  Experiment to discover what works for you and then roll with it.

Just Say No To The Diet Trap!

Today’s article comes from deep within my heart.

It’s a brand new year and for many people a new year means fresh new goals and/or resolutions.  If your goal is to lose weight, it can be really tempting to try the latest fad diet that the fitness or diet industry is promoting.  It’s a normal human response to be intrigued by all the marketing that these industries roll out in January… especially if you’ve gained a few pounds over the holidays.

Before you jump on board and commit to a new diet, it’s important you know that temporary, restrictive diets have a 95% failure rate and can do more harm than good.

Have you ever suffered through the physical and emotional torment of the latest fad diet simply to find yourself unsuccessful and frustrated?

Or, maybe you lost a bunch of weight only to gain it back again. Even worse, you gained back more than you lost.

You are not alone. As a personal trainer I have seen and even personally experienced so much physical and psychological damage from dieting, it makes me want to scream!

Some of the reasons diets fail you are:

They slow down your metabolism
They cause you to store fat, not burn it
They’re unsustainable for most people’s lifestyle
When you stop starving yourself and go back to a normal calorie-consumption, you WILL gain weight
Lack of energy due to being hungry
Some diets ask you to eliminate entire food groups and key nutrients
They can cause binge eating
They can cause stress which is known to cause belly fat due to hormonal changes in the body

Look, I get it. You want to get thinner and you want it now. Most of us do not want to wait the amount of time it takes to lose weight that statistically stays off for life. The diet industry is counting on that and the marketing is very convincing!

Losing weight and keeping it off for good without dieting starts with a change in mindset.  The mindset that you are going to switch to healthy eating.  Eating for health and dieting to lose weight do not always look the same.  Things like portion control, cutting back the foods and or liquids that you know are excessive,  avoiding overly processed foods, and meal planning are all considered healthy eating, not starvation diets or skipping meals entirely.

HERE ARE SIX TIPS THAT WILL HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT WITHOUT DIETING

1) You need to eat.  It absolutely amazes me that there are still diets out on the market today that recommend dangerously low calorie meal plans when the science says otherwise.  Your body will get really good at storing what it doesn’t get enough of.  For example, if you eliminate fat from your diet, your body will not want to burn fat. It will want to store fat.  Sound nutritional research tells us that you need to eat fat in order to burn fat.  I am a firm believer that the low fat and low carb craze has contributed heavily to the obesity crisis in the United States.

Instead of restricting what you eat, you’ll find more success when you focus on a balanced diet that is centered around whole foods.   A balanced diet includes carbohydrates, proteins, fruits & vegetables, healthy fats, and water.  Any diet that cuts one of these important nutrients out should be avoided.

2) Exercise almost every day.  Do your best to exercise six days per week. Try an interval workout 2-3 times per week and alternate with more moderate activity on the rest of the days.

Choose a fun activity on your off day like a moderate hike, cross country skiing, swimming, or taking your kids or your dog to the park.

If exercising six days per week seems overwhelming, start with 20 minutes per day 2-3 days per week . You’ll still get better results than doing nothing at all.

3) Eat in.  This is the biggest tip I can give you.  Cook at home for the next 30 days and bring your lunch. Use light recipes from sources like EatingWell, Cooking Light, and Health magazine.

4) Cut back on liquid calories. Try substituting alcohol, sodas, and other higher calorie drinks with water. Try adding lemon or cucumber for some variation.

If cutting out liquid calories sounds extreme, take a more moderate approach and cut down to half or even a quarter of what you usually drink. You can always go back to your normal consumption if you want to.  This is about figuring out what works for you personally.

5) Cut back on dessert.  Desserts are usually loaded with calories. If you have a sweet tooth, try substituting with fruit or one piece of dark chocolate.

6)  Be authentically you.  It’s really important that you pay close attention to what’s most important to you.  Not everyone wants to be or was designed to look like the models on the cover of fitness magazines.  If challenging yourself to reach an elite athlete status is fun for you and you can achieve it in a healthy way, then by all means go for it!  However, if you know in your heart of hearts you’d just like to live a long healthy life, fit in your jeans, and have the stamina to do the activities you enjoy without a whole lot of restrictions in your life, then general health and fitness is for you so please don’t beat yourself up because you’re not “doing whatever it takes” to look like a fitness model.

I recommend you try my suggestions above for the next 30 days and stay consistent.  However, If this all seems a bit overwhelming,  pick as many things from above that you can realistically implement right away and stay consistent.  Diet and exercise are very personal which is why a canned approach rarely works.  We all have different lives, different goals, and different needs. 🙂

You CAN Eat Out And Still Fit Into Your Jeans

As a San Francisco Bay Area resident, I have by nature become a “foodie.”  That doesn’t mean I’m a food snob.  It just means I really like great food.

Life is too short to eat food that doesn’t taste good. Food is part of our life and it’s more than just fuel. It’s an experience.

With that being said, too much indulging can make or break our ability to maintain or lose weight.

Over the years,  I’ve had the opportunity to witness many clients lose weight by simply cutting back on how often they were eating out.  Or, if they were not able to pack meals regularly, they lost weight by ordering foods that contributed to their weight loss when ordering off a restaurant menu.

One client that comes to mind  lost two clothing sizes because she stopped eating out for lunch on work days.  By limiting the amount of meals she was eating in restaurants, she was able to have way more control over what and how much she was eating.

I realize that eating out while conducting business can be part of someone’s job description.  If that’s the case for you, make a mental note to yourself to pay attention to what you are ordering when you eat out for any event that is not “social.”  This includes volunteer work as well.  Some salads and sandwiches in restaurants can pack in over 1000 calories per meal.  So, no matter how much exercise you are getting in, if you eat out often you could be sabotaging your efforts.

I encourage you to bring lunch and snacks with you when you are out for the day. If you are someone who eats out often for business then you want to get to know your menus and think of the food as energy to keep you going rather than a special treat. That doesn’t mean that you have to throw taste out the window.  Just pick things like grilled fish instead of the triple cheeseburger.

Do your best to make take out in the evenings an exception and not the norm. If you are not sure what to cook, get a subscription to some good cooking magazines that have easy light recipes. I use these when I do my weekly meal planning before I go to the grocery store.  We do not sacrifice taste for calories in my house.  If it doesn’t taste good, what’s the point?

When eating out becomes more of a treat you will notice that you enjoy it more and you are less likely to overindulge.  You may even find you have extra money to spend on something special that’s not food related at all.
